Handmade Cats Dolls by Sate

Sate(さて) is a Japanese doll artist who handmakes each of her dolls with care. She began her doll-making journey in 2022, when she wanted to create a doll inspired by her beloved cat, Sate—the muse behind her artist name. Cats remain her favorite subject, a reflection of her love for her two cats, though other charming animals occasionally make their way into her collection.

For Sate, the most important part of creating a doll is simply that it feels cute to her. She hopes that the joy she finds in making each one comes through in the finished piece. No two dolls ever turn out exactly as planned, which is part of the charm—and perhaps one of the greatest challenges of working entirely by hand.

Sate creates at her own pace and on her own terms, following her instincts and the occasional 気まぐれ (whim). Her dolls have found their way into the homes of many collectors, with some returning to collect not just one, but several of her pieces. She feels deeply honored that her work is loved and collected in this way.

Sate believes that the joy of something cute needs no translation. We hope you’ll take your time with each little character, and perhaps find one that speaks to you :)
